Mendelssohn compose l'inno cristiano "Hear my prayer" nel 1844. William Bartholomew ne scrisse le liriche adattandole dal Salmo 55. La seconda parte dell'inno, "O for the wings of a dove", viene spesso eseguita separatamente. L'inno divenne famoso nel Regno Unito grazie ad una registrazione realizzata nel 1927 con la voce bianca Ernest Lough.
