"Beautiful Dreamer" è una delle ballate più memorabili di Stephen Foster. Fu scritto nel 1864, circa sei mesi prima della sua morte, quando si trovava in uno stato d'indigenza e in cattive condizioni di salute, e sopravviveva vendendo (a prezzi estremamente bassi) canzoni scritte in fretta.
